Pauline Bass Brooks (Capps) Burnett

(Printed in THE MILLER COUNTY AUTOGRAM-SENTINEL in the column, 'WINDOW TO THE PAST', Dec. 21, 2012)

Pauline Bass Brooks Capps was born near Tuscumbia on October 31, 1857, the 10th child of Silas Capps and Julia Ann Brumley. Her father was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee about 1818 and her mother was a native of Missouri, born 1820. Her grandparents were Benjamin & Zelphia (Hines) Capps and Daniel & Rachel (Patterson) Brumley; all were pioneering families of Miller County. The 12 children of Silas & Julia Capps were:

1. Nancy Capps 1839-1867 m. Carroll Roark ;  2. Lucinda Capps 1841 - 1841;  3. Lucinda Caps 1842- ? m. (1) Archie Roark (2) James Hamilton; 4. Benjamin L. Capps 1844-1901; 5. Silas Capps, father of Pauline, was killed in the Civil War in the state of Indiana. He was buried in the National Cemetery at New Albany, Indiana across the river from Louisville, Kentucky . Her mother, Julia Ann, never remarried but remained his widow until the end of her life. Eventually she moved to Iberia where she died in 1908 at the age of 88 years.

Pauline Bass Brooks Capps (she was given 3 names) married Allen William Burnett in Miller County in Nov. 1876 although some records also list her marriage as May 1877. I don’t know for sure which is correct. Allen was born in 1855 in Franklin County, North Carolina. He and Pauline became parents of nine children:

1. Malinda Ann Burnett 1878-1962 m. Charles P. Flaugher
2. Cordell Urias Burnett 1879-1958 m. Florence Belle Stark
3. Stella C. Burnett 1883-1973 m. (1) Edward Lurton -d. 1939

8. Benjamin Lile Burnett 1897-1969 m. ?
9. Halleck Brumley Burnett 1900-1940 m. ?

Pauline Capps Burnett died on December 17, 1943 in Miller County at the age of 86 years. She and Allen had lived in the old Ramsey community of Osage Township near Capps Landing. When she died in 1943 she was survived by her husband of over 60 years, 8 children (youngest son, Halleck, had died in 1940), 45 grandchildren and 54 great grandchildren. Her funeral services were held at Mt. Zion Church , south of Tuscumbia, and conducted by Rev. Warren E. Burd of Iberia . She was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, near the church, with the Adams and Casey Funeral Directors of Iberia in charge of the proceedings.
