Name: OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS SCHOOL
School District: Miller County R-III
Open: 1899
Status: Still in session
Location: Jim Henry Township
In 1899, the Catholic mission school was staffed by nuns of the Order of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ. Sister Christine Wierschern and Sister Casmir Garworski were the first teachers. It is recorded the sisters taught in the lower rooms of the frame school and lived in the upstairs rooms. Their records show that they had 80 children in their classrooms at that time. The school was staffed by the Sisters of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ until 1905. When it was no longer possible to obtain nuns to staff the school, lay teachers were hired in their place.
Some of the first lay teachers were Louise Krieg, Antonia Castrup and Francis Castrup. The most well-known teacher was Anna Schackmann, who came from Chicago, Illinois, and taught at the school for fifteen years.

In 1924, an attempt was made to consolidate the school district with the small one-room schoolhouses that were nearby. Those old country schools included: Jim Henry School, Kempker School, Pleasant Ball School and Sanning School. However, the idea was shot down when there were not enough votes in favor, so the issue failed.
During the Great Depression years, Our Lady of the Snows became a public school supported by the state and again staffed by lay teachers. During this time era the students would attend “vacation school” in the summer months in Mary’s Home to continue their religious education.

Under the direction of Father Lorenz, a new brick school [current school] was completed in 1951 and was used as a public school district until 1954. That same year the Sisters of St. Francis from Nevada, Missouri came to teach in Mary’s Home, once more being returned to a parochial school. Enrollment in the new parochial school averaged about 125 students each year for the next 20 years.

The Sisters of St. Francis staffed the school until 1975, when it became necessary to hire lay teachers to take their place. Today the school is still in full operation with four lay teachers teaching grades one through eight. The school has approximately 85 students receiving the benefits of a Catholic education.

"I salute these teachers of Miller County’s past days. They were of a completely different breed. Today’s teachers have a very “cushy” life when compared to these dedicated people who faced many hardships in their daily life of teaching to a different generation.
I just want all former teachers of these old schools (and there are still few left today) to know how very much I admire you and the wonderful job you all performed educating our unlearned Ozark ancestors." ~ Peggy Smith Hake - c/1995
