Julia Ann (Tate) Mace

(Printed in THE MILLER COUNTY AUTOGRAM-SENTINEL in the column, 'WINDOW TO THE PAST', March 17, 2012)

Julia Ann Tate was born July 21, 1844, in Tennessee and I think it may have been in Smith County, TN. I have tried to find the names of her parents and the nearest info I could get was John Tate and his wife, Sarah Chandler, who were living in Smith County about that time. I found where they were parents of 3 sons and 1 daughter before Sarah’s death at an early age. The sons were Samuel B., David H., and John W., but the daughter’s name was not given.

Julia Ann married Thomas Walker Mace (1842-1923) on November 1, 1860, in Saline County, Illinois. Thomas was a son of George Mace, born 1815, and Mahulda A. Oglesby (1821-1898). Thomas was born in Saline Co., Illinois . The children of George and Mahulda Mace, that I found record of, were: Thomas Walker Mace b. Illinois 1842; Julia Ann Mace, born 1846 Illinois ; William H. Mace b. 1849 Illinois ; Dr. George R. Mace b. 1854 Illinois ; Franklin W. Mace b. 1859 Illinois .

Julia Ann and her husband, Thomas Walker Mace, with several children, moved from Saline County, Illinois and relocated in Miller County, MO and settled near Iberia sometime between 1880-1885.

They became parents of a large family including:

1. George Allen Mace 1861-1931 m. Mary C. Adams
2. John Logan Mace 1863-1884
3. Louise C. Mace 1865-1933 m. Harvey Groff
4. Martha A. Mace 1867- ? m. no record found
5. Mary Edna Mace 1869-1955 m. Frank M Arnold
6. Samantha Josey Mace 1873-1928 m. Selby John Heltzell
7. Julia I. Mace 1878-1880
8. Lillian May Mace 1876-1954 m. David Porter Farnham
9. Cora M. Mace 1879-1979 m. Earnest Edgar Benage
10. William Thomas Mace 1882-1923 m. Martha/Mattie Ferguson
11. Ollie Mace 1885-1981 m. John Musick

Julia Ann Tate-Mace died at the age of 84 years at the home of her daughter, Lillian Farnham, at Iberia in February 1929. Her husband, Thomas, had died 6 years earlier in 1923 and was buried at Iberia Cemetery . Julia Ann died from influenza which was very prevalent in the years following World War I………She had been a member of the Iberia Baptist Church for many years and it was there her funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. W.H. Zumwalt. She was buried at Iberia Cemetery beside Thomas, her husband for 63 years.
