Note from Kelly:

Henry "Tol's" third wife's name was Mary Jane (Dennis) Blackston. Mary Dennis married James H. Blackston in Ohio and they moved to Miller County, Missouri. James was killed at the beginning of the Civil War and Mary returned to Ohio. After Henry Tolbert Wood's second wife passed, he went to Ohio and married Mary Jane and brought her back to his farm in Miller County. Henry passed first, and Mary continued living on his land until she died. Her children buried her under the Blackston name in the same grave as James Blackston. She had no children with Henry "Tol" Wood. Children with James Blackston: Minerva, Mary, and Philander Blackston. Mary's death certificate is in the Missouri archives under the name Mary Jane Woods--the Wood family were often listed as Woods.

(Printed in THE MILLER COUNTY AUTOGRAM-SENTINEL in the column, 'WINDOW TO THE PAST', Jan. 17, 2013)

Henry Tolbert Wood, Jr (called Tol) was born in Scott County, Virginia 28 July 1836, a son of Henry Wood Sr. (1805-1888) and his second wife, Hannah Vineyard (1805-1872), Henry and Hannah married in Scott County, VA on May 1, 1831.   Henry Sr’s first wife was Sarah G. Wilcox whom he married in Virginia.

In the mid 1840s, Henry, Sr., Hannah, and several of their children came to Miller County and settled in Equality Township near the families of Vann, Cotton, Harrison, Burnett, McComb and Vaughan.

The children of Henry Tol Wood and Hannah (Vineyard) included:

1. Sarah/Sally Wood b. 1832 m. Paschal Davenport 1850
2. George Wood b. 1834 m. (1) Charity Vina Vaughan 1857
(2) Vrenna/ Viana Stark 1866
3. Henry Tolbert Wood b. 1836 m. (1) Elvira J. Vaughan 1854
(2) Eliza Jane Stark 1871
(3) Mary ______c/1866
4. Mary Smith Wood b. 1838 m. Alvin Kemp Vaughan 1862
5. Emily Wood b. 1841 m. James Davenport 1871
6. Margaret Wood b. 1843 m. James Vaughan 1863

Hannah Vineyard-Wood died in August 1872 and Henry Wood Sr. married his third wife, Sarah Cornett, in October 1876. Henry Sr. died in 1888 and was buried at Tol Wood Cemetery in Franklin Township .

Henry Tolbert Wood, son of Henry Sr. and Hannah, married Elvira Vaughan 27 Aug 1854, the marriage performed by John Brockman, minister of the gospel. Elvira was a daughter of Elisha and Martha (Johnson) Vaughan, natives of Virginia and Kentucky respectively.

Henry Tolbert/Tol and Elvira were parents of several children:

1. Sarah J. Wood b. 1855 m. Lewis Stark 1871
2. Tabitha C. Wood b. 1858 m. Thomas C. Roe 1883
3. Elisha Henry Wood b. 1860 m. Frances A. Davenport 1883
4. James Sterling Wood b. 1862 m. Nancy/Nannie Barrons 1893
5. Elizabeth E. Wood b. 1864 m. James J. Arnold 1882
6. Henrietta Wood 1866-1866
7. Anna M. Wood b. 1867 m. Charles W. Harrison
8. Wesley William Wood b. 1868 m. Alice Varney 1891
9. Marion L. Wood b. 1870 m. Lillian Dobson 1893

I believe Elvira died at the birth of her son, Marion, in 1870 and in 1871, Tolbert Wood married Eliza Jane Stark. She produced four children:

10. Samuel P.Wood b. 1871 m. Carrie May Herrington 1901
11. Mary Minerva Wood b. 1874 m. John W. Coffman 1892
12. Rebecca Annie Wood b. 1877 m. Edward D. Brown 1896
13. Rosa L. J. Wood 1878-1879

Eliza Jane died in 1879 and then Tolbert took his third wife, Mary _________, whom he married about 1886. Evidently he did not have children by Mary.

In the census of 1900 for Miller County, Tolbert and Mary were living in Franklin Township. In their household were two of his grandchildren, Mary G. Wood age 14 and William Wood age 13.

In 1900, their nearest neighbors were son, James Sterling Wood, his wife, Nancy, and their three children.

Henry Tolbert/Tol Wood died in 1902 at the age of 66 years. It is my understanding that Tol Wood died when a steam engine turned over on him which caused his death. He was buried in the burial ground which carries his name…. Tol Wood Cemetery, located in Franklin Township just a short distance east of Highway 54.
